The Ron del Barrilito distillery is a must-visit for any and all who love rum. Located in Bayamon Puerto Rico, the Hacienda Santa Ana has always been the home of Ron del Barrilito, established with the original signature Three Stars rum in 1880 by Pedro Fernandez. Inspired by methods utilized in brandy production, he produced small batches and then aged the rum in Spanish white oak vintage Oloroso sherry barrels. Rum served “from the little barrels” became known as the Ron del Barrilito. The distillation and aging process allow the characteristics of a well-made rum to shine through without unnecessary additives for color or flavor. Ron del Barrilito has since expanded its collection to include a younger rum great for making cocktails, and additional aged rums for sipping and enjoying as one would with a whiskey or cognac. A visit to the quiet and beautiful estate of Ron del Barrilito is highly recommended for any tourist in Puerto Rico, especially for those who already have a sweet spot for rum. Many of us have had a less appealing introduction to rum, but tasting this will change your mind. In addition to a guided and informative tour, a tasting room with a quick lesson is the perfect way to enjoy an afternoon. Also, be sure to make time to visit the bar for not only the best pina colada you will ever have, but also reimagined classics that will turn anyone into a rum drinker.
